why my macaw has this behaviour?

hi all i placed the cage for my macaw near by window. first 2 weeks he was fine, happy, playing with his toys..etc then i noticed he was starting to look out of window very often. and he stoped playing with his toys.(im rotating toys very often so he does not get bored). in the past 5-6 days sometimes (usually in afternoon) when i enter in his room he will start flapping whis wings until he get tired. If i leave the room he will stop. he will do that only when is on the top of his cage,if i move him somewhere else he will stop. today he tryind to fly trough the (closed) window and fortunately he was not hurt. Im trying to understand what is going on! He is almost always out of cage, have all toys and food,i take him very often with me when i go around the house and he loves it! just i dont understand why he reacts in this way lately,i feel like he wants to go out of that window, should i move his cage to different location? he is 9 month old and 2 months with me. thanx

  1. Can he see his reflection in the window? He may think it is a mate that he needs to protect.
  2. maybe it misses bieng outside
  3. This bird doesn't understand what a window pane is.He wants to go through what he sees as a big hole in the wall and go outside. It's a good thing he isn't flying or he would crash into it or worse crash through it.Move his cage right away.
  4. it may be that he wants to go out side....take him to a local avian vet and have his wings clipped (also giving him an attitude adjustment)....it is also possible that he can see his reflection in the window and is currently bonding to it...also moving there toys around is going to stress him out and he may start plucking his feathers...u can take a stand out side and set it up in a fairly shaded area and let him sit on it outside for a while but make sure u have his wings clipped before u even think of taking him out side
  5. Trust me, he is not trying to tell you anything. He is exercising his wings, and actually, he should be doing this. It is good for muscle tone and his lungs. They normally do it on top of the cage because that is the highest point of their home, it's the top, it's the dominant position. A lot of the wing flapping has to do with being dominant over you, that's why he does it when you are in the room. This is a natural thing and nothing to worry about. Your bird keeps looking out the window because there is so much to see that he has not seen before. At first he did not notice things outside and when he really paid attention to outside things, it fascinated him. When he tried to fly through the window, he did not know there was glass. I hope you have his wings clipped. I tell people to put a window perch on a favorite window and let their birds look outside for awhile everyday. It is enchanting to them and they need the change of scenery once in awhile. He could have seen his reflection in the glass. This also fascinates them. Liking his reflection is not a sign he needs a mate. Macaws are not like having a budgy where you get two of them to keep each other company. (which is not necessary) They are fine without mates and actually their behavior is better when they do not have mates. Please read my profile.
