- USF is right in the center of SF. It is surrounded by residential areas and rents can be slightly less expensive than other areas. Mostly middle class, not a superior neighborhood but a decent one. You can find lots of great restaurants within a mile of the campus. There are several bus lines that serve the campus, the 5, 31, 38, and 43. Check out http://www.sfmta.com for maps. Both campuses are located on hills with great views of the city and the GG bridge. The campus can often be windy and fog bound so always take a jacket with you. There is a Lucky supermarket, a Trader Joe's and several Walgreen's near the campus so shopping for food and personal items is easy. SF weather in general is moderate. Temps span the low 50 to low 70's 90% of the time. It rains more in the winter months, summer and fall temps may occasionally spike to the 80's with maybe 6 days a year with temps above 90. SF is naturally air conditioned. Because of the hills there are many micro climates and temps my vary as much a 20 degrees from one part of the city to another. Rent is high in SF much higher than most parts of LA. SF public transportation is far better than LA simply because The City is much more compact than LA. Public transportation is crowded during morning and evening rush hour less so during the day or evenings. SF is much more casual in style than LA. People here are not so hung up on appearance and the people are more laid back. Restaurants are on par with LA prices but we have more than our share of high end restaurants. SF is a food mecca so we have more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world. USF Campus is about 1.5 miles from Japan Town and about 3 miles from Chinatown. There is however a smaller Chinatown along Clement between 2nd and 10th avenue which is less than a half mile from USF. There are many good Chinese and Japanese restaurants along Geary and Clement. The trick to dressing in SF is layers. Hoodies, a light jacket, tee shirts and jeans are perfect.
