are there any import fees using EMS shipping from china to canada?

I want to order something off of ebay from china to canada using EMS shipping. The value of the items will be around $40 canadian, not including the shipping costs. Will there by any "surpise" extra fees at my door when I receive the package? I've had bad experiences with UPS, they charged me an extra $50 for "import fee".
