What is Public Transport like in Sydney?

Can you get around with Public Transport or is a car needed?

  1. Public transport in Sydney is...problematic, at the best of times. High costs, safety issues and almost never timely. Plus in public transport policy terms, the "penetration" is terrible. Sydney definitely a car-compulsory city.
  2. Sorry but I have the opposite opinion to the last guy. Public transport is excellent. There is the underground rail system you can just pop up at so many places then the ferry system is good to places like Manley or the river Cat to other places up to parramatta and there are buses. It doesn't matter if the rail system is not on time as they run very often. Driving around Sydney is a nightmare. Parking is expensive that's if you can get a park , There are ways to get discount travel so look into that maybe you can purchase something from overseas A lot of Countries have rail deals for tourists but they usually need to be bought before you arrive. Then it's real cheap for pensioners and students or cheaper to buy a weekly ticket. So Public transport for sure.
  3. I would agree that the public transport system is adequate. Yes, occasionally trains and buses run late, but often it's because of a traffic-related problem, so you'd face the same problems in a car. Car traffic is horrible and parking is expensive. I'm in a situation where my car and petrol are paid for through my company, yet I still go public transport whenever possible.
  4. You can but allow MORE time. I was never satisfied at the rail service (even for someone who only uses it occasionally to get into the City on weekends) - I never knew how my friends who caught the trains to school managed everyday. I've been pretty impressed with the new timetable they've introduced lately. Service has definitely improved. Trains are more punctual and frequent. Crowding and standing in carriages has been gone (well, on the line I'm on). Buses are also effective here. Many areas are welly serviced by them.
  5. A little crowded. Sometimes you feel like you're in India or something. LOL!!
  6. to be absolutely honest it sucks. car is necessary. go to europe, japan, china, korea and even thailand. Their metro system is amazing makes sydney trains look so 3rd world lol.. not to be offensive but i live here and take the train 2 times daily.
  7. average trains are quite dirty, arent as frequent as they should be, buses are good but take LONG detours compared to melbourne sydney transport SUCKS but at least the transport is better then before the olympics, if it wasnt for the olympics i wouldnt still be in sydney cause i wouldnt be able to get around the city
