What is the best place in the USA to live without a car (good public transport), with a nice climate?
I'd like to move to the States to work there for a year or so and I have no clue where to go. I got some great advice on a question I asked earlier about that, but I didn't mention the traffic and some other things. It would be important to me that the rents are not too expensive, that it's not too hot and not too cold (maybe a beach nearby), that I can get everywhere on my bicycle or by train/bus. A nice landscape would be nice too. Do you know what state might be best.. or even what town? lol thank you RD! That's very tempting. :-D thanks a lot, Bob! I'm used to South England climate. :-)
Public Comments
- San Francisco: Great public transportation, hilly landscape, some beaches, often too cold for swimming on a regular basis, ungodly high rents, increasing unemployment. Los Angeles: Spotty public transportation, all the other drawbacks of San Francisco, miserable air pollution. Miami: Prone to hurricanes, spotty public transportation, great beaches, level landscape, high violent crime rate, all the other drawbacks.
- I'd rule out New York, anywhere in California, Seattle, Miami, Orlando and so on. Any of the major metropolitan areas are going to have high prices and crime rates. But they usually have the best public transit systems, even if using them can be risky. Look to the less known areas like the Carolina's or Portland or along the gulf coast. I don't know what type of climate you are used too so can't really tell you how any of those are suitable to you.
