Do I need a G license to drive in the United States?

I want to take a road trip to Buffalo, NY from Toronto but only have a G2 license. I have searched the Ministry of Transportation and looked at the NY Transportation Department but can't seem to find any information! I've asked everyone who I thought would know, but this seems to be a puzzling question for most. Does anyone know if you need a G or will a G2 suffice?

  1. I am an Ontario insurance broker. As far as I know, a G2 license is considered a valid driver's license, as it allows you to drive unaccompanied; it no longer falls under the category of what is considered a "learner's permit". If you're still concerned, you may want to call the MTO directly and ask. But I think you should be fine.
  2. I can confirm that a G2 is good enough. I drive across the border all the time and never have any issues.
  3. I live about 5 minutes from a US border and I used to cross over all the time with my G2. 4 of us went down to PA one night also and I only had my G2. I think customs is just a little skeptical and they may detain you for a long time with questions but you'll be fine. Have fun on your trip!!
