Seizures and Driving?

I have a question hoping to get some good sound advice from. I have epilepsy. It has been well under control for over 4 years. I have been able to get my drivers license and have been driving for the past 3 years. Recently, there was a thunderstorm with alot of lightening. I was caught in the storm that night. The lightening wasn't just a little in the distance it was the kind that lit up the whole sky. If flashed several times and at that time gave me a headache. I went home and went to sleep and woke up in the morning a little disoriented. I knew from the way I was feeling (slow to respond when people were talking to me, deep gasping breaths, and very weak) those are my signs of a seizure. I kept myself at home and stayed in bed had a seizure and was taken to the hospital and released a few hours later.. the doctor contacted the ministry of transportation and had my license suspended. Do you think that since I know what triggered the seizure that they would reinstate

  1. I know how hard it is to lose your license for this. Mine was gone for two years. I also commend you for the way that you dealt with this most recent event. You sound as though you really have a good grasp of your triggers and times of danger. I would drive with you without hesitation. I feel as though you should make a case to have your license reinstated. The other thing it may be worth checking if your license is actually "suspended." With my history of seizures, my doctor told me that I needed to write a letter to the DMV and send my license to them. When I was seizure free for two years, I went to get my license back and they basicaly handed it back to me and I asked if they would update the computers and they told me that I was all set in that it was never listed as suspended. For what it's worth... a lot to consider. If you don't get it back why don't you move to the city and ride a bike etc. I support you and hope that all works out for you.
  2. I doubt they will reinstate your license. In some states you have to go so long without a seizure before you can get it back. No matter what the cause. I live in a state where there is no time limit for seizure activity. My Epileptologist however tells me when I can drive after Ive had a seizure. Its better to be safe than sorry I guess.
