What government discounts are available for Department of Transportation contractors?

I am a weather observer and its a government contracted job. Upon getting hired I received a Dep. of Transporation badge. I was told that I could use it to get government rates on hotels, does anyone know how I would go about doing this, and what exactly is the discount? Also, would I be able to get discounts in any other fields (i.e. airline)? a coworker of mine just used her DOT ID to get hotel discounts for a family vacation.

1. If you are traveling on government business, the badge will work. If you are NOT traveling on government business, you won't get a discount.
2. Mainly only hotels give those discounts. You just book the "governmental" rate and show your badge during check-in. The amount of the discount is normally 10%....however you can get better deals just by booking in advance online.
