I have a VW Transporter 1.9 diesel.Yesterday the alternator packed in,this is the 2nd one in 2 years both new?
Any idea what is going wrong? I purchased a new battery as it will be a few days before the garage can look at it.Any idea how many starts i'll get from a new 620amp battery? My van is from 1994.I'm avoiding using it at night and I dont use the radio.

- most new alternators are not actually new, but re con, you need to get it sorted sooner rather than later, its olny going to start a few times if its not charging.
- I have had trouble with a VW Polo 1.9 SDI car. It has now had 3 alternators and two batteries as well as various other attempts to fix it. The problem has now been solved by the AA. The red lead from the Alternator goes into a "joint" block, this item is mounted on the gearbox. The joint was not "sound" and needed snapping back together. It is quite possible that your van has a similar set up. Follow the main cable from Alternator to battery very carefully and check everything is OK.
