Location Transport

What city has the best public transportation in the United States?

I have been trying to look for jobs in a state that has good public transportation because I presently do not have a car. I plan to get one within a year, but in the interim I would like to know states that have good public transportation. I only know about New York and Washington DC because I have visited those places.

Public Comments

  1. San Francisco has great public transit. Many people who live there do not have a car. Many people who move there have sold their cars or park them outside the city. Even many of the bus stops tell what time the next bus will arrive. SF is a vertical city so public transit is easy. Much better than DC I think.
  2. Most public transportation is administered at a local level, so you need to look at specific cities rather than states. For example, San Francisco has decent transit, but LA is awful and they are both in California. New York has the best system, and DC, Chicago and Boston are good too, but beyond that, transit is kind-of embarrassing in this country. I would find a place close to your job and unless you live in one of the cities mentioned above, count on buying a car as soon as possible or be a frustrated public transit rider.
  3. New York's is by the far best. One out of every three public transit trips in the United States is done in New York or its suburbs for a reason. Chicago, Boston, and Washington all have decent systems as well.
  4. New York City!
  5. No other U.S. cities can beat New York! New York is New York no matter what other people say.
  6. Montana has the best public transportation. You can ride your horse anywhere you dang well like.
