What would be the best central location to stay in the Costa Del Sol?

My husband and I are planning a week long trip to the Costa Del Sol. We plan to visit Gibralter and Tangier for sure but are still planning our other excursions (would love suggestions). We would like to stay in one central location for the week and do day trips from there. I would love some suggestions as to what would be the best location and must see places while we are there.

  1. Estepona may be a good place to stay. It is within driving distance for excursions to Gibraltar, Jerez de la Frontera (where sherry comes from), Sevilla, Ronda, El Chorro (north of Málaga). In the other direction, you should visit Nerja and La Herradura. From Estepona to the Alhambra Palace at Granada would take about 2 and a half hours. The best way to go is the coast road via Motril. It is a stunning drive. However, there is so much more than just those places. Much depends on your budget. My favourite place on the Costa del Sol is Nerja. I just love the place. I had lunch there 2 days ago in stunning surroundings. i'm fortunate, I live here.
  2. I agree with everything Carrajillo says. what a good answer....I even gave it a thumbs up! I lived in Mijas Pueblo for 2 years...it's bang in the middle of Estepona and M alaga, though it is a tourist area, this being my job. There are many pretty villages around the area, and Puerto Banus is just lovely. I've been there many times, and I used to go to Gibraltar for shopping (there's m&s there!) have a wonderful trip...the whole area is beautiful.
  3. I do not think that Tangier is that great. Gibraltar is ok just to say you went into the caves and saw the monkees. I would rather stay farther up the coast in Torremolinas at the Hotel Bajondillo. Very cheap, but clean and fantastic views and many Europeans there. From there you are very close to the train or bus to other places along the coast, be it Nerja or Ronda or Granada. Don't miss those places! In this hotel you can get all the info you want and make that your base. It is in the middle of the Costa del Sol! Forget Marbella since it is very expensive and the old section has nothing that you cannot see in Ronda or Mijas. Definitely go to Granada, if not on a tour, which you can get 5 min from the Hotel Bajondillo, or by car, if you are more adventurous. We also took the train from Torremolinas to Malaga, the hub of everything, then a fast train to Cordoba. We did it in one day and had a fantastic view of the Mosque of Cordaba. Unbelievable! Do it!
