Can you transport a refridgerator laying down?

My mom is giving me a fridge and we only have a van to transport it. Someone told me that you CAN transport it laying down, but you have to wait for 24 hours to let the freon settle before you plug in back it in! Is this true?

  1. Yes! It is.
  2. that is correct, otherwise you will destroy the compressor.
  3. Sorry I do not see how you can transport anything lying down LOL
  4. I wouldn't recommend laying it down. The freon will leak out of it, and if it's hauled in a van that is even more dangerous. Maybe you can rent a uhaul or something to move it if no one has a truck.
  5. try to avoid laying down, atleast keep the top higher than the bottom. and yes let it stand before switch on
  6. That is totally correct the reason you wait is for the oil in the compressor to settle back to the bottom of the compressor however its still better to transport standing up.
  7. There seems to be a lot of urban legends about this. The correct answer is , yes you can lay it down to Transport it. You must let it sit upright on delivery for 12 to 24 hrs to assure refrigerant oil to flow back into compressor and to return to room temp. While its on its side clean under ref and check for dead mice and other debris.. good luck !
  8. see grounded ans
  9. It's NOT the freon, it's the oil in the compressor unit, and yes you can, just wait for AT LEAST 24 hours to turn it on. You need to take into account many factors. if it's colde where you are it should wait longer, if it's cool and you are going to use it out in the garage let it sit for upto 4 days before plugging it in. But if it's reatively warm, Above 60F and you are putting it IN the house, then 24 hours is plenty.
  10. Thats true.
  11. Yes that is true.
