How to use public transportation in San Diego to get from the airport to a beach?

I'm trying to get from the San Diego airport to the closet beach using public transportation, but I have no clue how to. Can anyone help me out please? Also, are there any beaches in San Diego that you can sleep on overnight without the cops bothering you?

  1. I think the closet beach (from SAN) is Ocean beach. You can take MTS 923 from Airport Terminal 1. Check Timetable & Map here ... http://www.sdcommute.com/Services/Route.aspx?r=923

Take Bus #992 "Airport via Harbor Dr" from the airport to the Santa Fe Depot, catch the Blue Line Trolley north to the Old Town Transit Center, transfer to Bus #8 "Pacific Beach via Mission Beach" to Mission Beach. They are patrolled. If you want a great place to stay right on the ocean, try the Blue Sea Lodge in Pacific Beach. Rates are reasonable. http://www.bestwestern-bluesea.com/ BTW avoid Ocean Beach. It's mostly druggies, drunks, bums, and low-lifes.
  3. Don't know the exact answer but go here to read about SD bus system: http://www.san-diego-travels.com/san-diego-bus.html go to the bottom of page and click to "maps and routes". From here you can choose start destination as Airport and final destination - it will tell you which buses to take. In general, bus system in SD is nothing to write home about. Sure the buses go everywhere but sometimes it's once per hour and sometimes they don't run on the weekends. If you possibly can, take a taxi. You cannot sleep on the beach overnight.
