Why are people not bothered about sharing a car ride/lift or hitchhiking anymore?

at a time like this - "crisis", people are not bothered about cutting down travel costs. They would rather pay over the odds and travel by train, bus, hired car or aeroplane rather than SHARE a car ride.With so many cars around, ecological concerns etc it's surprises me why people won't share transport costs!

2. I think I'd rather pollute the air a little instead of getting my throat slit by some demented hitchhiker. Al Gore (the green jesus) might not like it, but he doesn't pick up hitchikers either.

4. People are scared that every hitchiker is a murderer/ rapist and there's a paedophile around every corner. It is still possible to hitchike- I got a lift this year.
