Location Transport

My stolen car is found, but I have moved to a different city...?

A couple of weeks back one of our two cars was stolen from our apartment parking lot - the car was 2000 Civic - with a KBB value of around 5K. We were in the middle of a move and my wife was to drive it to the other city (500+ miles), just two days from when it was gone... with no car - my wife and daughter had to fly. I am still here with the other car - scheduled to drive to them next weekend. Got a call from police dept. yesterday that they've found the car and there's some minor damage to it - in addition to the ignition having been ripped open. While this have been a welcome news at another time, the move has caused a problem - I am stuck here with two cars. What's worse, is that we have an international travel (long vacation) scheduled two weeks from now. What I want to ask is - will insurance pay for transporting the car to that other city (we had already changed our address to that city just few days before the car was stolen)? What can I ask them for? Given the circumstances (move, Intl. travel) I'd rather they keep the car and just settle my claim - but I guess that's not an option... or is it? As long as the Insurance co. pays for transporting the car and the repair, I think I will be alright - is this something that I can negotiate for? Thanks in advance for taking the time.

  1. 1. No, the insurance company will not pay to transport your car. They owe to have the car returned to the city it was stolen from. It's there. However, you can do an internet search and hire a car transport service. It's really not as expensive as you would think. 2. Can the insurance company keep the car? In most states, the car is a total loss if the damage equals or exceeds 75% of the cars fair market value. If the estimate to repair the car hits 75% or more- car is a total and the insurance company pays you the fair market value less your deductible. If the estimate is less than 75%, then they will pay to repair the car.
