Sydney public transport concession cards?

I frequently go to a newsagent and buy a concession card without showing any ID, I do this because it's half the price and cannot afford the full fare. I am backpacking through Australia and as far as I know, I am not eligible for concession. What are the chances of getting caught? and I do get caught, what will happen?

  1. They are supposed to ask for ID and should refuse to sell you a Concession ticket if you can't present it. Chances of getting caught? Who knows? They are random checks. There have been months where I don't get checked and some weeks where I'd get checked on like 3 days. But if you do get checked, they will ask you to show them ID. If you have forgotten to bring it, then they will write you an infringement anyway but will let you photocopy your ID as well as write a note explaining what happened to send off to the head office for consideration. The fine will be waived if things are genuine. However, if not, it will count as not traveling with a valid ticket and you can get fined $200 on the spot or $550 maximum. It will also cost more if the matter goes to court. Bottom line is, it's not a worthy risk. The fines will be much more than what you are supposed to pay in the first place. **Edit** I buy my Weekly Multi from the Post Office and newsagents. They've all asked for my student ID.
  2. Actually there is a point I wish to correct Dan. In fact the ticket sellers are not actually allowed to ask to see proof of concession. The bus driver and conductor however can ask, and the conductor and police are able to fine you $200 for fare evasion.
  3. You may get caught, maybe not. In my 10 years of taking buses, i've been asked to show my concession card probably 4-5 times? And one time i did get caught but they gave me a warning, not a fine because i pretended to be absolutely clueless about how the system worked! As the guy said to me.. "i'll give you a warning, because you were cooperative". If you do get caught - a) warning b) a fine
