How does 2 day shipping work? What makes it so fast compared to the other services?

I want to know how much of a difference it is, in a package's point of view, to travel by 2 day shipping than regular shipping. Does the 2 day get priority over others? Does it get sorted before everything else? Police escort? Time warp? What makes that package get delivered so much faster?
