how do i track someone by a cell phone?

okay one of my family members is missing and i want to track his Verizon wireless prepaid cell phone before i go get police help but i have no credit card or no cash anyone know of a site that's totally free that can track his number and give me a exact location? please and thank you :)

1. Call the police. You can't track people based on their cell phone number a) without them confirming it via text or w/e and they need to be connected to the internet constantly for you to do it, otherwise can you imagine how badly people, even kids would get stalked?

3. No such service for you to trace a cell phone that never had "tracking" software installed in it. If they are "missing" why would you not go to the police? Waiting only allows the battery in the phone to drain even more. Once the phone dies or is turned off, there would be no "tracking the missing phone", and unless this was an Amber Alert or adult kidnapping, or other crime, the police are not going to trace your "family members" phone. There are so many "FIND MY PHONE" type apps and web services, but of course you do have to think ahead and install them BEFORE you lose the phone/person. And again, the police are not going to bother, unless there is a really good reason to use the cell phone as a means to help find someone.
4. You couldn't track a phone even if you had money. The police working with the carrier may be able to triangulate signals to within a certain area if the phone is being used and they'll only do this if there's a real emergency.
