NY licensed driver buying Canadian car?

I looking at buying a used car from via a private sale in Toronto and want to register it in New York. Is it possible to get temporary tags from the Ministry of Transportation to drive the car to the states?

It is possible to get a Temporary Vehicle Registration, however the vehicle has to be registered and plated in the your name first (the Temp Registration is a special sticker you put on the plate). However for a vehicle to be plated in Ontario you're going to have to provide proof of insurance from an Ontario insurer. You can contact Service Ontario at 1-800-267-8097 and see what additional information you can obtain. You may want to consider having the vehicle towed or shipped by rail down to you.
