vw transporter T5 5th gear doesn't work, any ideas?

Hi, im thinking of buying a vw transporter t5 and the 5th gear doesnt work. Does anyone have any idea of what could be wrong with it and how much it would cost to fix? Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, paul

1. Either the syncromesh is shot or the gear is worn. a rebuild/rebuilt is your best bet. If you do, might as well replace the clutch
2. Depending on mileage probably the recon gearbox is your best bet, as stated by the previous contributor if you do buy this vehicle change, or have the clutch changed while the gearbox is down. In general excellent vans, I've had three and they are very robust and well put together, far superior in my opinion to their equivalents made by other manufacturers. Good luck anyway, Gizz.
