Crossing the border at Houlton, ME?
Hey, I'm planning a trip to visit my boyfriend in New Brunswick, and I was wondering about what the best idea is to cross the border. I'm taking a bus (greyhound) from Mississippi to Houlton, Maine, and I figured from there I could call a cab to take me to the border crossing. What exactly should I expect there? I figure I'll be walking across once I'm dropped off, so is there a specific location I should go to since I'm walking? How much, roughly, do you think it will cost to take the cab from the station there to the crossing? My boyfriend will be picking me up on the other side and driving me from there. I'd just like as complete a run-down as I can get for what I should expect, as I've never done this before and don't want to end up confused and overwhelmed... Ahah. Any and all info will be helpful, thanks. I'm doing it this way because I couldn't find a bus that would take me across the border into NB. Reason I'll be taking a cab to the crossing itself is because yeah, I don't want to be walking along the interstate. And yes, of course I have my passport. Trust me, if I had found a bus that would take me across, I would have planned for that instead. Also, I suppose I should add that when I ask about what the best way to cross the border is, I mean from Houlton. Boyfriend didn't come himself because he doesn't have a passport xD

- that is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard ... take the bus right to where you are going in canada ... why on earth would a single woman be walking across international borders ??? and you do realize it is an INTERSTATE HIGHWAY you would be walking alone on ... seriously, how much more could it possibly be to take the bus the rest of the way ... and make sure you have a passport or you won't be getting back into the united states ...
- If you can get to Bangor by Greyhound, then Acadian Bus Lines runs a bus from there to Saint John, NB. It seems like it's impossible to book this particular trip on their website, but you can see it on their network map: http://www.acadianbus.com/Corpo/CarteReseaux.aspx I would suggest you contact them to verify the schedule at infobus@acadianbus.com or at 1-800-567-5151. I heard rumour a while back that they were considering cancelling the route, but haven't seen anything since at least early 2010, so I think it's still in place...
- I live in Houlton and I believe the bus drop is at a large truck stop called Irviing approximately two miles east of the actual border crossing right off the Houlton interchange of the I-95. Yes, you could get a cab to take you to the border station for a few bucks which would not be hard to do but I'm curious as to why your boyfriend would not simply come into the U.S. to get you and then both return to Canada? Yes, he would need to clear customs on the U.S. side but it is done everyday.
