How to you clean the carbs on an 1983 vw transporter?

I have a 1983 vw holdsworth 1.9 transporter...just wondering, is it an easy job to clean the carbs & how would I go about doing It?

1. A cheap easy way is to disassemble the carbs, put the parts in a large pan with tide washing powder & water then boil everything for at least 5 minutes. put back together with new gaskets. Be careful about spraying with carb cleaner as it ruins some plastic parts.
2. Have a person that knows what he's doing rebuild the carbs.
